A “certified” relation ensures that you are always communicating with the right person, even if the service has been compromised by a malicious third party.
It adds another level of security by exchanging additional keys between both ends of a relation, which are then verified for all exchanges on this relation.
To certify a relation when both devices are next to each other’s, one end asks the other end to scan a QR-Code. Alternatively, a relation can be certified over a video call allowing each end to verify it is interacting with the right person. During the call, codes displayed from one terminal are checked by the other person, thus allowing the exchange of certification keys.
